Poster Show
Parting Glances: The Queer Sundance Movie Poster Show (1985-2007)
Curated by Jenni Olson (author, The Queer Movie Poster Book) and Ellen Huang (founder, Queer Lounge).
From its inaugural edition in 1985 (when it was known as the United States Film Festival) the Sundance Film Festival® has been proudly presenting LGBT independent cinema, such as the modern gay classics Before Stonewall, The Times of Harvey Milk, Parting Glances and Desert Hearts. Through the '90s and the new millennium, the festival has showcased dozens and dozens of vital queer cinematic visions (Poison, Paris is Burning, The Celluloid Closet, Saving Face, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Tarnation to name just a random few). Sundance has been not just the launching pad but also (with the Sundance Screenwriting Lab, Producers Lab, Documentary Fund, and other forms of filmmaker support) the incubator for many of the milestone queer films of the past two decades.
Parting Glances: The Queer Sundance Movie Poster Show (1985-2007) celebrates the Sundance Film Festival® as a pioneering champion of queer cinema. Showcasing a generous sampling of original movie posters from some of the many LGBT films that have premiered at Sundance over the years, the exhibit is on view and open to the public at the Queer Lounge (608 Main Street), January 18-24, 11am-7pm daily.
CURATORIAL CAVEAT
It's not our fault that Sundance has shown so many queer movies over the years! We couldn't possibly exhibit the posters from all of them so we had to be selective in trying to convey a tasting menu that reflects the variety of more than two decades of all kinds of LGBT movies of all shapes and sizes. We apologize in advance if we didn't include your favorite movie poster.
Queer Lounge wishes to thank the Sundance Film Festival®, and to acknowledge the generous support of the many filmmakers and distributors who have provided posters to us: Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato, Eliza Byard, Wendy Dallas, Arthur Dong, Sandi Dubowski, First Run Features, Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman, Frameline Distribution, Su Friedrich, Dan Gelfand, Jill Godmillow, Barbara Hammer, Deborah Hoffman, Marcus Hu, Tom Kalin, Killer Films, Lesli Klainberg, Jennie Livingston, Picture This!, POWER UP, Melissa Regan, Regent Releasing, Greta Schiller, Tom Shepard, Bennet Singer & Nancy Kates, Sony Classics, Strand Releasing, Johnny Symons, Lewis Tice, TLA Releasing, Wolfe Releasing, and Zeitgeist Films.
After the festival, all of the posters will be donated to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
